Protracted Kazakh law firm battles ... Partnership fracture ... Chasing the money ... Large bill for former director ... Other offshore judgments registered in NSWSC

Kazakhstan-based law firm Michael Wilson & Partners Ltd, registered in the British Virgin Islands, emerged victorious in the UK High Court in its battle against former director John Emmott.

According to court documents, Emmott has been ordered to pay the eye-watering sum of £4,377,565 in a judgment delivered earlier this year. Emmott was further ordered to stump the costs of the proceedings.

This follows a list of winnings by MWP in English courts, as registered in Australia by Deputy Registrar Clayton in February 2024 (link to Orders & tables).

As at January 2026, monies owed to MWP are claimed to total over £5 million (including interest).

The seeds of the multi-pronged, 20-year litigation contest lie in the diversion by ex-partners of MWP’s business to a separate partnership.

Michael Wilson is a former Baker & McKenzie partner. A recent round of Michael Wilson & Partners v Emmott in the NSWCA and be found at Quick ‘N’ Cheap
